『アルプスの氷河』 50円
アイスキャンディーの名前じゃないよ。
チンダル(John Tyndall)の "Glaciers of the Alps, Mountaineering in 1861, and Hours of Exercise in the Alps "のいう長ったらしい名前の本の前半部分を訳したもの。
チンダルは別に『アルプス紀行』という本も出ていて、また日本の雪の大家、中谷宇吉郎の『アラスカの氷河』という本もあって、どちらも持っているので、つい最近まで『アルプスの氷河』も持っていると思い込んでいたのである。検索してみたのは初めてかもしれない。「日本の古本屋」ではなく、Googleでいきなり探したところ、運の良いことにシロウト古書店で「50円」ででているのを発見。送料にいくらかかってもこれは安い。すると、メールが来てヤマトのメール便なら１６０円なので、合計２００円で良いという。（１０円まけてくれた！） さて、その２００円をどうやって送金するか？ 郵便貯金で送金しようとしたら手数料は１３０円。うーん、ふだんは高いと思わないのだが２００円を送るんだからなぁ。よって、切手で送ることにした。それも封書なら８０円かかるところ、ミニレター（郵便書簡）なら６０円で送れる、と、これも売り主が教えてくれた。かくして、合計２６０円で貴重なチンダル本が手に入ることになった。早く来ないかな。
ちなみに原書の方は、６月頃に入手済で、そっちは＄８＋送料＄８弱。これも安かったね。
肝心の内容だけど、氷河の研究がこうじて、すっかり山好きになってしまったチンダル先生の、科学と山のお話。このblogのタイトルの「復氷」の話も書かれている。
