"Theory Of Heat"  James Clerk Maxwell

かのマックスウェルが1888年に書いた本。（初版は1871年）
それが、2001年に復刻されたおかげで、２０００円以下で買うことができました。
熱の話がシロウト向きにわかりやすか書かれていて、ぼくには大変有難い。
もちろん放射熱のことも。

まず、熱素(Caloric)説を否定しておいて、続いて "heat"という言葉を丁寧に説明してくれます。

　熱(heat)という言葉は、素人っぽい感じで、科学的ではないようだけれども、これで十分にあいまいさなく〈測定しうる量〉を、表わすことができる。 なぜならば、「熱」と量を表わす言葉とをあわせて使えば「どれだけの量の熱」のことを言っているのかがわかるからである。
　私たちは、熱という言葉には、「熱いもの」という抽象的な意味は持たせない。もし「新しいミルクの〈熱〉」と言いたい時には、〈より科学的な言葉〉である「温度」を使って、「新しいミルクの温度」と言うべきである。

などと書いてあります。

Calorimeter(熱量計)という名前は、Caloric（熱素）から来ているにしても、もう使い慣れているし、Thermometer(温度計）と紛わしいこともないので、そのまま使っている。

など、ひとことづつトリビア的な話が面白い。

読みはじめばかりで、全体のことはまるでわかりませんが、期待しながら読んでいます。熱の「伝導、対流、放射」の話を少し読んだだけでも、何ともいえずぼくの好みです。「対流でも最終的な熱の移動は伝導による」とかね。

ざっと調べたところでは、日本語訳はでていないようです。でればいいと思うんだけどなぁ。

マクスウェル（ 1831～79 ）は電磁気学を大成したイギリスの物理学者。 この熱学書の初版は１８７１年刊で、当時最新の気体分子運動理論を紹介している。 展示書には「第十四号」という複本番号が墨書されているので、すでに明治１３年ごろ、成立したばかりの東京大学理学部で教科書として用いられていたことが わかる。》だそうです（初版は1871年刊とのこと）

そうそう、どうやってこの本に出会ったか、というと、Googleのテスト中のサービス「Google Print」 で、"tyndall radiation heat"か何かで検索していたら、この本が見つかったからです。Google Printは「本の中身」まで検索して、見つかったページとその前後を「立ち読み」することもできるのです。
